How CBD and THC were discovered—and why they differ
CBD and delta-9-THC share a molecular formula but arrange their atoms differently. That structural difference contributes to different pharmacology and is why a product label must identify cannabinoids rather than simply say ‘hemp’.

Isolation came before understanding
Researchers isolated CBD in 1940, reported its structure in 1963 and characterised delta-9-THC shortly afterwards. Modern analytical methods allowed scientists to separate and identify compounds that earlier observers encountered only as plant mixtures.
CBD was initially overshadowed because it did not reproduce the characteristic intoxicating effects associated with THC. Later pharmacology showed that ‘non-intoxicating’ does not mean chemically inactive or automatically risk-free.
Similar formula, different arrangement
CBD and delta-9-THC both have the formula C21H30O2, but their atoms are connected differently. That changes their three-dimensional behaviour and interaction with biological targets. It is inaccurate to describe CBD as simply THC with the high removed.
Fresh plant material also contains acidic cannabinoid precursors. Heat and time can change their form through decarboxylation, another reason laboratory method and sample condition matter.
Why product evidence still matters
A broad-spectrum, isolate or full-spectrum label describes an intended extract category; it is not a batch result. A current certificate should identify the sample, method, reporting limits and cannabinoid findings.
